What does Photoshopped mean?

You hear it a lot in the media anymore..don't you? People will say "oh, that picture isn't real, it's Photoshopped". In fact, you would think that eventually the dictionary would add this word so the layman could look it up. Well, never fear, I will tell you what it means.

First you will need to know that there are photo programs that let you work with photos and graphics. You can do all sorts of things with these programs, i.e. size them to fit better on your screen, color the picture, and effects. The list goes on and on. It is been sort of an unspoken (maybe it's spoken too) rule in graphic work that Photoshop is the king of all these programs. It is such a king, that its creator even offers a course to use it.

Photoshop the program is so powerful in what it can do that people have grown to say, "it's been photoshopped" when referring to an extreme deviation from what someone would consider a normal picture. For example five legs on a person or just wiping someone completely clean from a picture. When a picture looks too horrid or too good to be true, it just might be ...da da da dum.” Photoshopped.”

Photoshop comes from Adobe. Yes, they are the same people that let you read those nice PDF files for free. These folks also distribute the program Flash and Shockwave that enables the play of many animations and movies online. While Adobe Reader, Flash and Shockwave are free; there are many of their programs that are not. Photoshop is not.

Since I am an Open Source kind of gal, you may wonder what my take is on buying Adobe Photoshop for editing your pictures. Okay, here's my take. If you are a professional that makes his/her living with graphics, you should probably have this. If you are someone that really fancies the idea of being able to take an entire person out of photo and amazing other things, then, again you should probably have this. You might think it's pricey, but that really depends on what you want to do and what you have to spend. I am an Open Source kind of gal, and I own it. I will always own it.

Once you own the program, they have many textures and extras on their site for free. So there is definitely more value down the road.
